Mystery Shopper Fraud

Mystery shopper fraud is another scheme to watch out for. If you are offered work as a mystery shopper and receive a money order for an excessive amount, be cautious and verify its authenticity before taking any action.

Fraudsters often offer mystery shopping work and promise payment for tasks such as assessing a shop’s customer service or checking an online store. They send a money order that initially appears legitimate but is for too much money. You are then asked to return the “excess” to an account or payment system they specify.

However, these money orders are often forged or invalid. If you return the “excess” to the fraudsters, you lose your money. Verify money orders and do not make transfers if you have doubts about their legitimacy.

If you receive a suspicious offer to become a mystery shopper, always check the company or person offering the job. Never transfer money to unknown accounts or payment systems, regardless of how convincing the offer sounds.

Stay vigilant and do not fall for mystery shopper fraud. If you notice suspicious activity or become a victim of fraud, immediately inform the police or other law enforcement authorities to help prevent further criminal activity.
