Scams Targeting Older People

Scams targeting older people are becoming increasingly common and require particular caution. Criminals often target older people because they may be more vulnerable and less experienced in dealing with fraudsters.

A common method is financial fraud. Scammers may offer to manage older people’s finances, promising high returns and large sums of money. In reality, they are fraudsters, and if an older person gives them access to their finances, they may steal all their money.

Another common scheme is the “large sum of money” scam. Fraudsters may call or write to older people claiming that they have won a large sum, but must pay a small fee or provide financial information to receive it. Of course, there is no “large sum of money”, and if the person shares their information or sends money, it simply disappears.

To prevent scams targeting older people, follow these recommendations:

- Never entrust your money or financial information to unknown people or companies.

- Be especially careful with offers to manage your finances or promises of a “large sum of money”.

- If you receive offers or claims that sound too good to be true, discuss the situation with someone close to you or someone you know.

- Never share personal or financial information over the telephone or online unless you are certain that the other person is trustworthy.

- Contact social services or consumer protection organisations for further information and support.

Following these precautions will help older people avoid fraud and keep their money and property safe.
