The results returned by a search on suchen.expert depend mainly on the starting point, the search term and the filters selected. If you first choose the correct search scope and then refine the search step by step, you can tailor the results more precisely to your needs.
1. Choose the correct search scope
A search from the home page is global. It is suitable if you do not yet know which type contains the advert you are looking for or if you want to include results from different areas.
On a search or results page, searches are performed only within the type that is currently open. For example, if you are in ‘Marketplace’, new search terms also remain limited to that type. If instead you want to search in ‘Lost’, ‘Found’, ‘Services’ or another type, first open the type you want, or return to the home page for a global search.
2. Start with a clear search term
First, use a clear, commonly used term that describes the item, service or subject you are looking for. When searching with terms, results are displayed as soon as you have entered at least three letters.
If the list of results is too small, simplify the wording or try a commonly used alternative term. If it is too large, add one genuinely important characteristic. Too many highly specific words at once can exclude suitable adverts.
3. Use categories and other filters deliberately
When you are in the appropriate type, a suitable category can make the results easier to review. If you are unsure, start a little more broadly and then narrow down the results step by step. This makes it easier to see which selection suits your needs.
4. Search for a specific advert by its ID
Every advert has a unique ID. If you know this number, you can use it to search directly for the advert. If you do not know its type, enter the full ID in the global search on the home page.
On a search or results page, an ID search also remains limited to the type that is currently open. An advert from another type will not be found there. An advert can also appear only if it is still active and publicly available. Deactivated, deleted or non-public adverts cannot be opened through search.
5. Check systematically when results are missing
If the search does not return the expected result, check the settings one by one:
- Are you on the home page or within a particular type?
- Does the open type match the advert you are looking for?
- Is the search term clear, spelled correctly and not unnecessarily specific?
- Is a category or another selection limiting the results too much?
- Was the advert ID entered in full and without typing errors?
It is best to change only one point at a time. This makes it easier to understand how each adjustment affects the results.
6. Use search history and search templates appropriately
A search template, by contrast, saves selected search criteria for a recurring search. If notifications are enabled for the relevant template, you can be informed by email about new matching adverts. The details are explained in Using search templates – receive automatic notifications.
A brief example
If you search for ‘BMW’ on the home page, the global search can include matching results from different types and categories. If instead you want to see only offers in ‘Marketplace’, first open that type and search for ‘BMW’ there. You can then select a suitable category if needed. Even if you later remove this category, the search remains limited to ‘Marketplace’ while that type is open.
With this sequence, you keep the search scope in view, start broadly enough and narrow down the results only when it is genuinely necessary.
